Thailand's Annual Banquet For The Monkeys

CHAN: Every year, the town of Lopburi in Thailand hosts a special outdoor feast for its most loved residents -- the monkeys. STORY: This year's monkey feast is the 18th anniversary in Lopburi which is about 150 km from Bangkok. The tradition attracts hundreds of tourists from across the region to celebrate with 3000 long-tailed macaques. At dawn dozens of villagers decorate the ancient pagoda of Prang Sam Yod and it houses hundreds of monkeys. Colourful ice blocks filled with fruits and flowers are part of a lavish banquet - 2000 kilogrammes of fruit, cookies, candy and Thai desserts - a real delicacy for the monkeys. The guests took to the tables with vigour. The party is organised by local hotelier who says the aim of the party is to thank the monkeys for bringing tourists to the city and attracting foreign business to Lopburi. [Yongyuth Kitwatananuson, Hotel Manager]: "I have the hotel, Lopburi Inn, where the business is quite successful. Each year we celebrate by preparing a monkey banquet. Every year as we make the monkey banquet, it seems like our business also gets better." According to legend, Hanuman the Monkey King was rewarded with the fiefdom of what is now Lopburi. Centuries later, monkeys still rule the area around the town's two most sacred sites. Villagers and other visitors keep watch over the energetic monkeys. www.thailandhighlight.com Tiger Temple, or Wat Pha Luang Ta Bua or Tiger Temple is a Buddhist temple in Western Thailand which keeps numerous animals, among them several tigers that walk around freely once a day and can be petted by visitors. The Theravada Buddhist temple is located in the Saiyok district of Thailand's Kanchanaburi province, not far from the border with Myanmar, some 38 km north-west of Kanchanaburi along the 323 highway. It was founded in 1994 as a forest temple and sanctuary for numerous wild animals. In 1995 it received the Golden Jubilee Buddha Image, made of 80 kilograms of gold. According to the abbot and others associated with the temple, in 1999 the temple received the first tiger cub, it had been found by villagers and died soon after. The story goes that several tiger cubs were later given to the temple over time, typically when the mothers had been killed by poachers, others who wanted to get rid of their tiger "pets" or those were under pressure to do so as laws and policies surrounding the keeping of cites protected species became more strict. As of 2007, over 21cubs have been born at the temple and the total number of tigers is about 12 adult tigers and 4 cubs. The subspecies of these tigers is unknown as none of them have been DNA tested, but it is thought that they are Indochinese Tigers, except Mek (a Bengal Tiger). There is also a possibility that there may be some of the newly discovered Malayan Tigers and it is likely that many are ...

Our firm decided to travel to the area to ascertain the extent of the floodwater damage, and to gain some insights on the types of problems the city of Bangkok could expect. The locals we spoke with reported that water levels had reached waist-high and chest-high depths. Many families had been forced to relocate from their homes, which were, to quote one interviewee, "under water"; another man reported extreme concern about losing income after the closure of his workplace. Perhaps the most concerning element of the interviews was the number of people who reported that they had received absolutely no local or governmental assistance -- no food, no water, no help transporting possessions to dry land.
