Southeast Asia (or Asia) is a subregion of Asia comprising countries that are geographically south of China, east India and north of Australia. The region is located at the intersection of geological plates, with heavy seismic and volcanic eruptions. Southeast Asia consists of two geographical regions: the Asian continent and islands arcs and archipelagoes to the east and southeast. The mainland section consists of Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and Peninsular Malaysiaduring the maritime section consists of Brunei, East Malaysia, East Timor, Indonesia, Philippines and Singapore. [1] Papua New Guinea is an observer from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and East Timor. Geographically, southern China, Taiwan, [2] Hong Kong [3] [4] and Macao [5], sometimes grouped in the subregion, Southeast Asia, though rarely politically divided as such.
